Hyderabad: Green India Challenge has launched the sixth consecutive year of its statewide Shami (Jammi) sapling plantation programme, titled “Oori Ooriko Jammi Chettu, Gudi Gudiko Jammi Chettu”.
Former MP and Green India Challenge founder Joginipally Santosh Kumar, along with MLA Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, planted a Jammi sapling at a temple and unveiled the campaign poster.
Santosh Kumar called for restoring the Jammi tree to its rightful spiritual significance and urged people to plant a sapling in every village and temple across Telangana. He said Green India Challenge would take responsibility for the initiative.
The Telangana government has recognised the Jammi tree as the State Tree. Soon after the formation of Telangana, the then Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao declared it the State Tree.
