2 am water supply turns a nightmare in Begum Bazar division of Goshamahal constituency

Highlights

Perennial traffic jams in the bylanes of Begum Bazar markets is also a major issue

Hyderabad: The residents in Begum Bazar division of Goshamahal constituency have been facing heavy traffic issues in the area and the promises to resolve it made by the leaders remain unfulfilled after every election.

The Begum Bazar division is spread in an area of 2.5 sq km and the area is known for the wholesale and retail markets. There are about 54,000 voters in the division dominated by the Hindi speaking North Indian community. The major areas in the division are Fish Market, Begum Bazar Market, Chhatri, Siddiamber Bazar, Bhu Lakshmi temple, Bartan Bazar etc.

The common problems being faced by the residents include huge traffic jams and fish market. While the vegetarians want the market to be shifted, the non-vegetarians and people who depend on the business demand renovation. The locals feel that the government is not keen to solve the growing problem of traffic in the area.

K Deepak, a resident of the area, pointed out the apathetic attitude of the authorities towards resolving traffic issues, which has been a major headache for the residents. Earlier, the traffic police had taken measures like not allowing heavy vehicles, but this was for a limited period and there was no permanent solution.

"The residents here have been spending sleepless nights over the irregular drinking water supply. Even after several pleas the Water Board supplies water in the area at 2 am in the night," said, another resident Arun Kumar. "Our MLA has been proactive in taking our calls even during nights but there is lethargy on part of the authorities," he said, adding that the authorities must install traffic signals at every junction to streamline the traffic.

The authorities had planned to have a parking lot at the backside of Osmania General Hospital but it has remained on paper. The shopkeepers of Bartan Bazar park their vehicles on the roads making it difficult for free flow of traffic in the area. The government took up modernisation works of the fish market prior to 2014 the works are still going on and the market is running on the road.

The nala works at the Osmangunj are the latest problem as the works have been going on for the last six months. The authorities say that it would take more time, but they are not revealing any deadline. Because of the nala works, the traffic is being diverted into the small lanes of Begum Bazar leading to more jams for most of the time during the day.
