Khammam: Leaders of the INDIA bloc on Thursday staged a protest rally in Khammam demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Election Commission was functioning in favour of the BJP.

The rally, organised under the leadership of District Congress Committee president Nuthi Satyanarayana Goud, began at the Pavilion Grounds and culminated at the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar.

Addressing the gathering, Goud alleged that the Election Commission (EC) had failed to maintain its independence and accused the CEC of acting in favour of the BJP. He alleged irregularities in electoral rolls, “vote theft” and concerns over electronic voting machines, and demanded Kumar’s immediate resignation.

Goud said the INDIA bloc would continue its efforts to protect the Constitution and democracy. He also thanked party leaders, workers and supporters for participating in the protest in large numbers.

Urban district Congress president Nagandla Deepak Choudhary criticised the functioning of the Election Commission and alleged that democratic institutions were being undermined.

CPI state secretary Bhagam Hemant Rao alleged that constitutional institutions were being brought under the control of the BJP and described the CEC as functioning like a “rubber stamp”.

CPM district secretary Nunna Nageswara Rao alleged that the Election Commission was facilitating irregularities in electoral rolls and demanded action against the CEC.

CPI(ML) Mass Line state secretary Gummadi Narsaiah said the organisation would continue its campaign over what he described as violations of the ideals of Dr Ambedkar.

CPI(ML) New Democracy leaders Avunuri Madhu and CCA Ravi Maruthi said public confidence in EVMs had declined and held the Election Commission responsible for the situation.

Telangana Jana Samithi district president Gopagani Shankar described the protest as a movement to protect democracy and said opposition parties would continue to work together on the issue.

Former MLC Potla Nageswara Rao, former MLA Kondabala Kotaiah, former Telangana State Warehousing Corporation chairman Rayala Nageswara Rao, SUDA chairman Puvvalla Durgaprasad and several Congress and allied-party leaders participated in the rally.

A large number of party workers, functionaries of affiliated organisations, municipal representatives, block, mandal and town-level Congress leaders and other supporters also attended the protest.
