New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the extension and strengthening of 850 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) across India to speed up trials in rape and child sexual abuse cases, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Vaishnaw said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is determined to act strictly against crimes targeting women and children.
He said the decision seeks to ensure that existing laws are enforced effectively, even as the government works on bringing in new legislation to deal with such offences. These dedicated courts conduct time-bound trials and aim to speed up the disposal of pending rape cases and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The Centrally Sponsored Scheme for FTSCs, which includes exclusive POCSO (ePOCSO) courts, was rolled out in October 2019, following the enactment of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018, and directions from the Supreme Court.
