SVIMS uses ‘Asleep DBS’ technique in advanced neurosurgery

A 23-year-old patient from West Godavari district has undergone an advanced brain stimulation procedure at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), with financial support from TTD and Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Trust.

The patient, Bokka Naga Satish of Perupalem village, was treated using bilateral Globus Pallidus Internus Deep Brain Stimulation (GPi DBS) technique. The procedure was performed under anaesthesia using advanced ‘Asleep DBS’ method, allowing doctors to complete electrode placement without keeping the patient awake.

Neurosurgery team used preoperative planning, advanced imaging and precise navigation to guide the placement of specialised electrodes in Globus Pallidus Internus on both sides of the brain. The electrodes were then connected to a stimulator system to deliver the required neuromodulation.

Doctors said Asleep DBS technique allows such procedures to be performed in a controlled manner under anaesthesia, avoiding the need for the patient to remain conscious during electrode placement for neurological testing.

The treatment involved a total financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh. Of this, Rs 5 lakh was sanctioned under TTD High End Therapy (Pranadana) scheme, while another Rs 5 lakh was provided by Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Trust. Satish recovered following the procedure and was discharged on Wednesday.

In another case, SVIMS doctors treated 67-year-old Nagireddy Siddareddy of Uddumallakurthi village in Sri Sathya Sai district for severe neck pain and associated problems.

After detailed clinical assessment and diagnostic scans, the neurosurgery team carried out a complex procedure with the help of advanced medical technology. The patient recovered and was discharged on Wednesday. The treatment was supported with Rs 5 lakh assistance under the TTD High End Therapy scheme.

SVIMS Director cum Vice Chancellor Dr Guduru Jagadish said the institute was making efforts to ensure that lack of financial resources did not keep economically weaker patients away from advanced treatment.

The procedures were carried out under the supervision of neurosurgery department head Dr VV Ramesh Chandra with a team of other doctors of the department along with anaesthesia, nursing and other supporting staff.
