Vijayawada: The Irrigation Department is gearing up to start the construction works of the retaining wall along the Krishna river from Varadhi junction to Koti Nagar downstream of Prakasam barrage at a cost of Rs104 crore to check the flooding of colonies in Krishna district.

Residents of Ramalingeswara Nagar, Koti Nagar, Balaji Nagar, Bhupesh Gupta Nagar, Ranigari Thota and other colonies had been demanding for the construction of solid retaining wall to check the flooding in rainy season. The State government has sanctioned funds for construction of the retaining wall and all set for starting the works very soon.

The existing retaining wall is not sufficient to prevent inundation of houses. Last month also, several thousand families were badly affected due to the Krishna river floods. More than 7 lakh cusecs and 500TMC water was released from the Prakasam barrage this rainy season. Thousands of families lived in panic due to discharge of seven cusecs flood water from Prakasam barrage last month.

In this backdrop, the construction of retaining wall will be very useful to the victims of floods.

As per the promise made by the YSRCP for the release of funds and construction of retaining wall, the government has released the sum. Revenue, Irrigation departments and Municipal Corporation worked in coordination to prepare plan for construction of the retaining wall.

So far, 2061 metres retaining wall has already been built. But this is not sufficient to stop flooding. Now, decks are cleared for construction of 1560 metres long retaining wall as part of the extension of the existing wall.

Krishna district collector Md Imtiaz on Tuesday convened a meeting with the officials of the revenue, Irrigation departments and Municipal Corporation and discussed starting of the construction works.

Joint Collector K Madhavi Latha, Municipal commissioner Prasanna Venkatesh, Vijayawada Sub-collector Dhyana Chandra, Irrigation superintending engineer K Murthy and others attended the meeting.
