Vikas Rao calls for collective effort to strengthen democracy
RajannaSircilla: BJP state spokesperson ChennamaneniVikas Rao has called upon citizens to safeguard democracy and strengthen democratic institutions, stressing that governments and political parties may change, but India and its democracy must endure.
Addressing a seminar titled ‘Dialogue with Eminent Citizens’ at Mahadev Function Hall in Vemulawada on Sunday, he highlighted India’s democratic traditions, tracing them to ancient institutions such as the ‘Sabha’ and ‘Samiti’ mentioned in the Rig Veda. Recalling Dr BR Ambedkar’s contribution to drafting the Constitution, Rao said its provision for amendments enabled it to respond to changing circumstances.
Defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he said the exercise was legally authorised under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 21(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. He said it aimed to remove duplicate and bogus entries and update voter details.
Rao maintained that peaceful protest was a democratic right but must remain within the law. He urged citizens to remain vigilant against forces seeking to destabilise democratic institutions.
