Mumbai: A beggar, Birbhichand Azad, 62, died after he was hit by a speeding train while he was crossing railway tracks near Govandi station.

When a team of the Government Railway Police visited his shanty near Govandi after they identified him with the help of hawkers and beggars, they found coins amounting to Rs 1.77 lakh in gunny bags and buckets covered with tarpaulin.

It took the cops eight hours to count the coins kept in the shanty, police said. The team was left shocked again after they found receipts of fixed deposits in different banks, worth 8.77 lakh.

The police team also found Azad's PAN card, Aadhaar card and senior citizen card issued in his name which had his address in Rajasthan.

Police have said they will travel to Rajasthan to trace his family. Meanwhile, Azad's mortal remains and his belongings have been handed over to his next of kin.
