Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday targeted the country’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru over his alleged failure to defend the revolutionaries sentenced to death by the British in the Chauri Chaura case, claiming that Madan Mohan Malaviya’s legal intervention saved 151 of them from the gallows.

Addressing a programme organised to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of development projects worth Rs 288 crore in the Chauri Chaura Assembly constituency, Adityanath said the British sentenced 172 people, including farmers, labourers and traders, to death following the February 4, 1922 violence, where protestors set fire to a local police station, resulting in the deaths of several cops.

“Congress leaders make a lot of noise about Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru being a great lawyer, but the truth is that after the Chauri Chaura incident, he did not come forward to defend the 172 people sentenced to death by the British,” the chief minister claimed.

He highlighted that Malaviya took on the case of the revolutionaries and, through his compelling legal arguments, saved 151 of them from the gallows. Adityanath noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Malaviya with the Bharat Ratna in recognition of his contributions and respect for the revolutionaries.

Describing the sacrifice of the Chauri Chaura martyrs as an important chapter in India’s freedom struggle, he emphasised the responsibility of everyone to honour their memory. The chief minister remarked that the impact of the Chauri Chaura incident was so profound that it even affected the leadership of the Congress at that time, while local revolutionaries continued their fight for independence.

He stated that India fell under foreign subjugation due to societal divisions and infighting, which foreign powers exploited to establish control and plunder the nation’s resources. Adityanath recalled the names of revolutionaries associated with the incident, including Nazar Ali, Komal Singh Yadav, Lal Mohammad, Begu Tiwari, Abdullah, and Shyam Sundar, who were hanged by the British in connection withthe Chauri Chaura case.
