kalpana kannabiramHyderabad : Prof. Kalpana Kannabiran, Director, Council for Social Development, and Co-founder, Asmita Resource Centre for Women, has received the Amartya Sen Award for Distinguished Researchers in Social Sciences for the year 2012 in the discipline of Law.

She is the second scientist from the state to get the same award along with Dr Vamsi Vakulabharanam, who got the award in the category of Economics. Kalpana is daughter of late KG Kannabiran, a highly-acclaimed civil liberties activist and a legal luminary. The award was presented in-absentia on May 6.

The award carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. Known for her in-depth study of social turbulence, the remedies and the legal angle to it, Kalpana has over the years has carved out a niche for herself in the field of social sciences.

A recipient of VKRV Rao Prize for Social Science Research by ICSSR in2003, she has studied extensively crimes against women, social foundation of non-discrimination and how the term social justice was misused in India and the constitutional impropriety. Amartya Sen Awards were instituted only recently by ICSSR and this is the inaugural year of presentation of awards. The awards are given to six scientists.
