Govt is planning Sub-Plan for BCsA 
Hyderabad: The State Government is contemplating a Sub-Plan for the benefit of backward classes (BCs). It will be on the lines of the Sub-Plan for SCs and STs, that were accorded a special status by enacting a law. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy announced this while launching the 'Amma Hastham' scheme symbolically named after the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at the Ugadi celebrations organised by the State Government at Ravindra Bharati. The scheme envisages the supply of nine essential items ---turmeric, salt, tuvardal, wheat, chilli powder, palm oil, tamarind and wheat flour�only for Rs 185 in a bag. Kiran Reddy said the government would take a decision on the BC Sub-Plan after holding a high-level meeting. He claimed that his government enjoyed the distinction of increasing the budget allocation for BC welfare from Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 4,028 crore. The announcement by the Chief Minister comes in the wake of persistent demands for various political parties and BC organisations, like AP BC Welfare Association leader R Krishnaiah, who claims who claimed that the BCs constituted over 50 per cent of the population. With an eye on the ensuing elections, the main Opposition Telugu Desam Party has already announced a BC Declaration, providing for 100 Assembly tickets and a matching budget allocation. The Chief Minister, keeping in view the severe power shortage facing the state, appealed to the people to observe austerity in the use of energy. He claimed that the increased power tariff was applicable only to three lakh affluent families, while the old rates would be collected in the case of 14 lakh power connections. Kiran Reddy disclosed that the Government would create jobs for 60,000 to 70,000 persons next year. He conveyed Ugadi greetings to the people of the state. He also announced the government's decision to launch a 'Telugu Baata' programme, with the aim of taking 'Telugu tanam' (native Telugu feeling) to the future generations. The programme would be taken up at a cost of Rs 25 crore in all 1,100 mandals. Civil Supplies Minister D Sridhar Babu listed the nine items to be supplied to the white card-holders. He said the Government had increased the paddy support price twice to benefit the farmers. The government was supplying rice at Rs1 a kg to the poor.
