Visakhapatnam: Seven police personnel on combing operations were killed and 11 were critically injured in a series of five land mine blasts set off by Maoists at Sunki Ghat Road in Kotakki Block in Koraput district in Odisha on Tuesday. The land mines were planted by Koraput Dalam in protest against the recent killing of a revolutionary writer Ganti Prasadam.
According to preliminary reports, a joint combing operation was being carried out in the thick forest area by the jawans of BSF, CRPF, Odisha and Andhra police teams when more than 150 Maoists of the Dalam fired at them, after triggering the blasts. The injured were shifted to Koraput district headquarters hospital and Seven Hills Hospital in here.
Police higher-ups could not rush reinforcements to the spot, suspecting more land mines, till late in the evening. Two injured BSF persons were admitted at the Visakhapatnam hospital and they were identified as Surajullah Khannan and Mahender Puchakkar and their condition was stated to be out of danger.
