Andhra Pradesh Information and Public Relations Minister D K Aruna wants Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi to contest from Mahabubnagar parliamentary constituency in Telangana for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
With TRS signalling that it may not merge with the Congress, the ruling party is in a tizzy and is looking for other means of making an impact during the elections. The Congress is mulling of playing the Rahul Gandhi Card to pull it off during the elections.
D K Aruna made this request to AICC general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh during her meeting with him. She feels that if Rahul Gandhi contests from Telangana, it will enthuse the party workers in the entire region. It may be recalled that Indira Gandhi had similarly contested from Medak parliamentary constituency in 1980, besides Rae Bareli. After she was elected from both seats, Indira Gandhi resigned Rae Bareli seat and retained Medak. When she was tragically assassinated on October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi represented Medak in parliament.
Aruna has also invited Digvijay Singh to take part in the Telangana Congress rally in Mahabubnagar on October 29.
