Spirit of enthusiasm, passion to know something new and eagerness to share the new inventions, zeal to explore the frontiers of technology marked the inauguration of AP Science Congress in Hyderabad on Thursday. Governor ESL Narasimhan formally inaugurated the Congress which coincides with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of AP Academy of Sciences, a premiere organisation working for developing scientific temper and popularisation of science. A souvenir on the fifty year journey was released.
The focal theme of three-day Congress is “Innovations in Science and Technology for Emerging Knowledge Society (ISTEKS)”
Nearly 600 delegates, most of them were young and enthusiastic learners of science and engineering, have turned up for the Congress and they will be presenting their papers in the next couple of days. Several national level institutes such as Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Natural Gas Commission, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and many universities have been participating in this event. There will be workshops on six major scientific themes besides special sessions and an exclusive one-day event for school children.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr T Ramaswamy, Secretary of Department of Science and Technology, Union Government felt that building scientific temper is huge task. ‘All are not easily convinced. We have to drive people towards this scientific end and spreading the temper should be the responsibility of each one and universities should play a key role in this endeavor” he opined. “Science is not just a means for living alone. It’s like a movement. Formulation of knowledge and its spreading for right cause should be the goal. Science should deliver social goods” he exhorted.
Narasimhan in his address said that ‘we are battling new challenges posed by the very forces of progress and trying to come to terms with it’. Referring to climate change, he said ‘in this hour of crisis that is affecting life on planet, we look forward to science to provide a deeper understanding of which area solutions can be found’. He called upon the scientific community to keep societal needs as priority in their endeavors. ‘Science is for people and society’ he underlined. Stating that the quality of research in our universities and institutions of higher learning is still a matter of concern, he remarked that a small country like South Korea produces more quality PhD’s annually than our national output.
Recalling the recent controversy over spending crores of public money for the Mars exploration, Dr Ch Mohan Rao, Director of CCMB felt that it is unnecessary and overly romanticised. “Mars exploration is necessary on both scientific and technological fronts. “On scientific angle, there is need to discover whether there are living conditions on the Mars and on technological front, it is necessary to demonstrate that India is also capable of undertaking such expeditions in outer planets” he explained.
