Hyderabad: Against the backdrop of the bus tragedy at Palem in Mahabubnagar district in which 45 persons were charred to death, Union Minister of State for Tourism K Chiranjeevi, in a letter to the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, said that the safety of bus passengers remained a matter of concern. He mentioned that private bus operators were violating the Motor Vehicles Act and were not following prescribed guidelines. He said operators should not be allowed to run their vehicles as per their own whims and fancies at the cost of lives of passengers. It was appalling to see that these violations of terms were taking place under the very nose of the transport authorities, he rued.
He said it was the responsibility of transport department officials to ensure that the guidelines were being followed by the bus owners, and any lapse on their part should be dealt with strictly.
