Vizianagaram: Public anger swelled on Saturday as it came to light that the house of ’Mahakavi’ Gurjada Apparao was burgled. This shock came even as people had been seething since the electricity officials disconnected power to the house.

Thieves taking advantage of darkness made off with the poet’s belongings, including the voice recorder, kept in the house. They broke the doors and their bolts and damaged furniture.

The incident came to light late on Saturday.

Prominent writers here have expressed distress over the snapping of power supply to the great man’s residence as also the theft. They expressed concern at the government’s failure to modernize apparao’s house, while strongly objecting to power supply cut.

Lok satta party leaders visited the house and made enquiries how the power bill remained unpaid for four months. They staged a demonstration and raised slogans against the government and people’s representatives.

Lok satta State secretary Beesetti Bobji speaking to press persons, accused the government of adopting a negligent attitude towards Gurajada and his residence. He said the administration had also failed to honour its promise of celebrating the poet’s 150th jayanti.
