Hyderabad: The severe cyclonic storm ‘Helen’, which crossed the coast at Machilipatnam around 1.30 pm on Friday, wreaked havoc in parts of Krishna and West Godavari districts and the Konaseema area of East Godavari.

Trees and electric poles were uprooted due to strong gales and heavy rain, resulting in disruption of road connectivity to several villages. Coastal areas in Krishna, West Godavari districts and the Konaseema area plunged in darkness as power supply got disrupted because of the high-speed gales with velocity of 100-150 kmph. Tidal waves rose 10-15 feet scaring the coastal people.

Coconut trees were uprooted causing massive loss. Banana plantations were destroyed in many mandals in East and West Godavari districts.

Paddy crop was flattened in several thousand acres in the three districts.

In East Godavari 13 of 16 mandals in Konaseema faced the wrath of Helen. The district machinery was taking steps on a war-footing to bring the situation to normal. Collector Neetu Prasad camped at Amalapuram and monitored the situation. Minister for Registrations and stamps Thota Narasimham said steps were taken to safeguard human lives and property. In West Godavari, Narsapur, Mogaltur, Achanta, Yalamanchili, Bheemavaram, Atthili and other areas faced the cyclone fury.

Paddy crop in 10,000 acres was inundated. Coconut and mango trees were felled by high-speed winds. Various crops in 40,000 acres were affected.

Normal life was thrown out of gear, as people faced hardship due to lack of power supply, heavy rainfall and falling of trees in residential areas.

Incessant rain, with strong gales, crippled the normal life in Visakhapatnam. Almost all the main roads and the national highway overflowed with flood water in the morning. Motorists and four-wheelers were forced to wade through water-logged areas.

The cyclonic storm spared Prakasam and Nellore districts, by changing its course and moving towards Krishna district.

The Meteorological department had initially anticipated that it would hit the coast between Prakasam and Nellore. Officials and people heaved a sigh of relief after it crossed the coast at Machilipatnam and spared the districts.

Many parts of Prakasam district experienced moderate rain from Thursday night and normal life was not affected.
