Hyderabad: Blaming the government for the damage of crops in the successive cyclones in State, Lok Satta Party national president Jayaprakash Narayan asked the farmers to fight for their rights against the government, which has let them down.

Addressing the 7th annual conference of the party, he recalled how the Prime Minister had promised assistance to the State at the party’s request, but the State government failed to submit proposals for strengthening of flood banks of Krishna and Godavari rivers. “It has not bothered to improve the drainage facilities for the last 25 years”, he lamented.

According to him, although nearly Rs 5,000 crore was being spent on rural employment guarantee scheme in the State, no attempt was being made to harvest rainwater. “The State continues to be ravaged by floods in the rainy season and drinking water scarcity in the summer”, he added.

Jayaprakash called upon the people not to excuse the UPA government ‘which in its 10-year rule had destroyed’ the State, and instead, teach a lesson to UPA for wrong policies affecting country’s economy, bringing in perpetuated poverty and indulging in corruption, and posing a threat to the federal character of the nation.

Coming down heavily on the government for failing to address the growing unemployment problem, the Lok Satta party president pointed out how China had created 20 crore jobs in the last 20 years, while India had created a mere 20 lakh jobs during the same period, while 1.2 people keep joining the ranks of unemployed each year.

Jayaprakash Narayan held that the Centre cannot keep the State united or bifurcate it forcibly. “Creation of a new State is going to be neither a catastrophe nor a panacea for people’s problems”, he noted. He asked people not to get fooled by those promising jobs and lands after bifurcation.

The party will be conducting a people’s ballot in each village and ward in the next few weeks to find out, if people want bifurcation.

He asked people to demand decentralisation of power, provision of government services as a matter of right, elimination of corruption, safety and security of women, restriction of liquor consumption, implementation of the SC and ST Sub-Plans, quality education and healthcare for all, and provision of skills and employment opportunities.
