Hyderabad: Students of the University of Hyderabad has taken the issue of rampant allotment of university land to private parties to the notice of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) and urged it to ensure that at least the remaining part of the land stays with the university.

In a memorandum to the Minister for HRD MM Pallam Raju recently, they asked him to transfer the entire land in the university name. V Sirisha, president of UoH Students Union, wrote a letter to the minister to this effect.
Sources in MHRD said that the ministry found merit in the letter and it may take up the matter with the university authorities. Earlier, the university administration drew flak for its decision to allot land to Reddy Labs, Metro Rail etc.

“It is 39 years since the university has been established but till now the land is not registered in the name of the varsity. This technical anomaly has been taken as an advantage by various private parties and individuals to encroach the land in collusion with the university administration. This should be stopped immediately and the land should be registered in the name of the varsity,” Sirisha warned in her letter.

Some of the university teaching staff have also been fighting against awarding university land to private organisations for the past several years. Vice Chancellor Prof Ramakrishna Ramaswamy had clarified in the past that the decision taken to allot 5 acre land to Metro Rail was in the interest of the university staff.
