Animal Adoption Gathers Steam, Golden Jubilee Year for Nehru Zoological Park. The adoption scheme that was launched in 2002, has come a long way. Even the number of visitors to the zoo has increased with more than 28 lakh visitors making it to the zoo last year.

Welcome funds for the menagerie, 31 adoptions in the last seven months

The golden jubilee year for Nehru Zoological Park seems to be good in terms of animal adoption. Individuals, schools, corporates, NGOs and institutions are coming forward to adopt animals. Since April, 31 adoptions have taken place with a commitment of Rs 55 lakh. On Wednesday, three retired employees of Vanitha Mahavidyalaya adopted a golden monkey and sand grouse birds. Earlier this year, in October, a Dubai-based chartered accountant N S Ramjee, donated Rs 8 lakh for the maintenance of an elephant. P Mallikarjuna Rao, director, Nehru Zoo said, “There is a growing awareness among people for animal conservation and we are sure the trend will continue in the future.” Shailaja, an animal rights activist says, “It is heartening to note that many are coming forward to adopt animals but the tiger seems to be on top of the adoption list. There is a need for people to look beyond the majestic feline and adopt other animals and birds as well.” Schools too have been adopting animals. NASR School, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, are schools that have been regularly adopting animals. But this year other schools in the city too have come forward.
