Bats for assured share of surplus water
Vijayawada: The Lok Satta president, Jayaprakash Narayana, on Tuesday, asserted that the State division process being pursued by the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, should be stopped immediately in the larger interests of democracy and federal spirit of the country.
Addressing a news conference here, Dr Jayaprakash Narayan found fault with the UPA leaders for deciding the fate of the people of the State sitting in New Delhi. He said that the attitude of the leaders in Delhi who, he said, were handling the issue in the most disgusting and humiliating manner. He said that some of the foreign ambassadors positioned in the country were also laughing at the way the State division issue is being handled. He said that the UPA leadership was not following the constitution or conventions in dividing the country’s second largest linguistic State.
He also requested the Supreme Court and the President to intervene and stop the process. He felt that the Congress leadership should apologise to the Telugu people in particular and the nation in general for their mishandling of the issue and facilitate discussions among the people of the three regions of Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra. He asked the government to involve the employees, students, representatives of the joint action committees and other stake holders in deciding on the future of the State.
He blamed the Congress leaders for using every issue for political gains ignoring the interests of the people and the State. He felt that people should discourage the power politics and help in evolving a new political system that would protect the interests of the people.
Asks for flood water share from Brijesh Tribunal
Dr Jayaprakash Narayana took strong exception to the raw deal given to the State in the Krishna water sharing by the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal. He said that the interests of the State were ignored by the Tribunal as the leaders have failed to represent the State’s case. He said that the leaders from the State were involved in the regional fight, while the leaders from the two upstream States of Maharastra and Karnataka secured maximum benefit. He said that the State had lost over 260 tmc ft of water from the river when compared the Brijesh Tribunal award with the Bachawat Award.
Expressing doubts over changing the allocation by the Tribunal, he felt the need to get at least assured share from the surplus water to be left into the sea to protect the environment.
He said that the ground water would get polluted and the coastal villages would have no drinking water if the flood water was not left into the sea.The Lok Satta chief also wanted the government to hold an all-party meeting on the Brijesh Tribunal Award and take remedy in the Supreme Court for justice. He also emphasized the need to take up Polavaram Project immediately and divert Godavari water to Krishna.
He said that the Polavaram project would give electricity and irrigation water for the catchment area of River Krishna.
He said diversion of Godavari water to Krishna would help the upstream areas along River Krishna from Nagarjuna Sagar to use the surplus water for their irrigation and drinking needs. The Lok Satta Krishna district unit president, Chennupati Vazeer, and other leaders were present at the news conference.
