Hyderabad: The already overburdened power consumers will get another shocker as power utilities are reportedly mulling over a tariff hike of at least 50 to 75 paise per unit from the next financial year 2014-15.

APTransco officials said the proposals by the four power distribution companies (Discoms) of imposing a tariff hike to the tune of Rs 8,500 crore would be submitted to APERC (AP Electricity Regulation Commission) for its final nod in one or two days.

They are at present experience a serious financial stress as they are unable to pass on the higher burden on account of increase in power generation costs to the consumers. The APERC has also turned down their plea to impose FSA (fuel surcharge adjustment) from this financial year.

This is the third consecutive year that the four Discoms – APCPDCL, APNPDCL, APEPDCL and APSPDCL – are seeking a hike in power tariff.

Sources said that the burden on power consumers would be around Rs 2,500 crore a year and the remaining Rs 6,000 crore (including free power and subsidy on power used by domestic consumers) burden would be borne by the state government. The officials said that the tariff hike is likely to be between 10 to 20 per cent for different categories.

The Discoms officials said, however, that the APERC would finalise the tariff hike only after holding a public hearing in January. This financial year, the power utilities imposed Rs 6,500 crore burden on the consumers, which resulted in a 26 per cent hike in tariff. The officials said that the four Discoms had shown Rs 11,500 crore revenue deficit for the year 2014-15 due to steep increase in cost of power generation and non- payment of subsidy amount by the state for supply of free power. The total revenue deficit of the four Discoms has been put at Rs 26,700 crore.

Sources said that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy had approved of the Discoms proposal to hike power tariff, at a high level meeting held with Energy department officials on Monday.
