Hyderabad: Life in 13 districts of Seemandhra region came to a standstill as people observed bandh on Friday opposing the decision of the Union Cabinet approving the State’s Reorganisation Bill to divide the state.

Transport services were paralysed as over 12,000 buses of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) went off the roads. Shops, petrol bunks, business establishments and educational institutions were closed in response to the shutdown called by YSR Congress party, TDP and Andhra Pradesh Non-Gazetted Officers (APNGOs) Association. Political activists, public representatives, government employees, students and other sections of people took to streets since early morning in all nine districts of coastal Andhra and four districts of Rayalaseema.

The shutdown was total in major towns like Vijayawada, Guntur, Nellore, Tirupati, Kurnool and Anantapur. Bandh was partial in Visakhapatnam.

In East Godavari district, YSRCP activists went round in boats in the river Godavari shouting Jai Samaikyandhra solagans. In Chittoor district, students of Venkateswara University staged protests on the highway and shouted slogans. Examinations in NTR health University and Andhra University were postponed.

In Tanuku of West Godavari district, the YSRCP acitivists attacked the car of Congress MLA V Nageswara Rao. This led to a clash between the Congress and YSRCP activists.

In Vijayawada, TDP MLA D Umamaheswara Rao and TDP activists were taken into custody by the police when they staged dharna at Benz Circle. All bus services including long distance services were suspended. Agitators’ burnt tyres on highways and staged protests. All business establishments were closed voluntarily.

Students of Andhra University in Visakhapatnam came out on roads and held protests opposing the draft T Bill. However, the bandh call in Visakhapatnam evoked partial response in the port city.

Schools, banks and business establishments remained shut as the agitators forced their closure. APSRTC operated city buses but suspended long distance services including rural services.The activists of YSRCP and TDP took out rallies in the city against the Centre's decision to bifurcate AP.

The APNGOs said that they would intensify the agitation and would chalk out their action plan on December 9. Meanwhile, police beefed up security at vulnerable places to maintain law and order. The situation was peaceful and no untoward incident had been reported. The YSRCP claimed that the bandh was total and successful.

Security was stepped up at the residences of Union minister, MPs, political party offices, vital installations and other places as a precautionary measure, a police spokesman said. "The bandh was being observed peacefully in the district and no untoward incident was reported. Police pickets have been posted at vulnerable points," he added.
