Hyderabad: It was a day of bouquets and brickbats for the AICC president Sonia Gandhi on her 67th birthday. While the Congress leaders in Telangana hailed her as Goddess and laid foundation stone for a temple for her, in Seemandhra region, the activists who are opposing bifurcation of the State garlanded her portraits with footwear and burnt her effigy. They observed Monday as “Vidroha Dinam” (betrayal day).
In Hyderabad, the T Congress leaders garlanded the photo of Sonia Gandhi at Gandhi Bhavan and celebrated her birthday as "Telangana Formation Day" as it was on December 9, 2009 when the Union government first made its T-announcement.
The T leaders also distributed sweets and praised AICC president to skies for trying to make the long-cherished dream of 4.5 crore people of Telangana a reality.
Congress veteran and former minister P Shankar Rao laid the foundation stone for the temple of Sonia Gandhi at Nandigam village in Mahabubnagar district to express his gratitude for delivering T-State. Rao said, “The temple will be built in a nine acre land in Nandigam village. “We are installing a 12-foot bronze statue of Madam Sonia in the temple for delivering T-State,” he said.
The temple, according to Rao, will be named as 'Sonia Gandhi Shanti Vanam'.
However, local BJP leaders opposed the temple and threatened to dismantle the structure if it was built. “Due to the delay in Telangana announcement, many youngsters from the region laid down their lives,” they said.
In Seemandhra region following the call given by APNGOs, united Andhra votaries observed the day as a “Telugu People's Betrayal Day.” In districts like Anantapur, Visakhapatnam, Chittoor and Prakasam the united Andhra activists observed it as a black day.
