Hyderabad: The arrest of Gaddam Sriram, LLB student and leader of the Osmania University Students’ Joint Action committee (JAC), by the Manthani (Karimnagar district) police, sparked protests on the campus on Sunday. Students staged demonstrations and burnt the effigy of Minister for Civil Supplies D Sridhar Babu suspecting his hand behind the arrest. Demanding his release within 24 hours, they threatened to intensify the protest if the police failed to respond positively.

Sriram's wife V S Swarupa, a student of English and Foreign Languages University (Eflu), filed a writ petition in the AP High Court on Thursday. She complained that her husband was implicated in a false case by the Karimnagar police at the behest of the minister as he was critical of Sridhar Babu’s activities.

Sriram had even gone to the extent of distributing pamphlets on the illegal activities of the minister. She feared threat to her husband's life from the minister and the police.

She has sought protection for her husband and demanded a CBI probe into the case.

The AP High Court on Friday admitted a petition seeking a criminal case to be booked against D Sridhar Babu for his alleged role in the illegal detention and torture of Gaddam Sriram. Adjourning the petition to December 24, Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy directed the Karimnagar district police superintendent to get Sriram admitted in Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) hospital in Hyderabad for treatment.

The judge also sought detailed report on the health condition of Sriram who was lodged in Karimnagar jail after his arrest on December 9. As directed by the court Sriram was admitted to NIMS on Saturday. D Sridhar Babu on Sunday denied to have anything to do with the arrest of Sriram.

Talking to media persons at Karimnagar, he clarified that he did not lodge any complaint against the student leader. There was no truth in the allegations being levelled by Sriram's wife. He said he was unnecessarily being dragged into the controversy.
