HC Asks Telugu Actors to Return Padma Awards. Mohan Babu and Brahmanandam's Padma Awards. Indrasena Reddy said though he had drawn the attention of the Union Home Ministry to the issue, no action was taken.

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday directed actors M Mohan Babu and Brahmanandam to return their Padma Shri awards within a week as they had used it as a prefix in the credits of the controversial film ‘Denikaina Ready.’

The petition was filed by senior BJP leader N Indrasena Reddy, saying that the Supreme Court, quoting Article 18 (1) of the Constitution, had held that the national award did not amount to a “title” and should not be used as a suffix or prefix and in case of non-compliance, the defaulter should forfeit the award. Mohanbabu and Brahmanandam were given the award in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

Indrasena Reddy said though he had drawn the attention of the Union Home Ministry to the issue, no action was taken. Welcoming the ruling, he said that the film had not only misused the national honours, but also showed Brahmins and Purohits in poor light, which was condemned by one and all. “What baffled everyone was the attitude of the makers of the film, who instead of expressing regrets went on an offensive against the community,” he said. The matter is posted for further hearing on December 30.
