· Lash out at officials, insist on replacement of coach

· Relent after railway mechanics board the train

Guntakal: Some passengers of the ill-fated Bangalore-Nanded Express in H 1 bogie forcibly stopped the train here on Saturday at around 1.30 pm and demonstrated saying they would not continue the journey in the coach.

They expressed anger that there was no AC and no fans in the coach; it was full of smoke making it difficult to breathe. They claimed that H 1 coach was partially burnt and it was near impossible to travel in it any further. They wanted the bogie to be replaced and refuse to allow the train to proceed. The demonstration forced DRM Manoj Joshi, senior DEN(coordination) Subramanyam, DCM Swamy Naik, ACM Ramanjaneyulu and others to rush to platform number 3. They were surrounded and bombarded with questions by the agitated passengers.

They were asked why the officials had failked to come to the rescue of the passengers when the train had halted at Kotacheruvu for several hours. The passengers bombarded the officials with pointed queries- why was the train not stopped at Dharmavaram for refilling water; why the powerless battery in the coach was not re-charged; did they lack the civic sense of providing water and more importantly why was the coach not replaced.

Joshi told them that there was no provision for keeping AC coaches in Guntakal division; only a sleeper bogie was available. The passengers refused when the officials offered to re-charge the battery.

The hard-pressed officials explained that railway technicians would travel in the train as a precautionary measure. Even as these angry exchanges were going on, travellers in sleeper and general bogies argued with H 1 passengers, saying they were getting delayed. They suggested the AC travellers could drop out and allow the train to move on. The AC passengers relented and agreed to board the same coach. Railway mechanics were arranged at around 2.40 pm, following which DRM and others heaved a sigh of relief.
