Anantapur: The scene at the Government-run Victoria hospital in Bangalore on Sunday was as gruesomely tragic as at the site near Puttaparti where 26 people were charred to death in the devastating fire in the B 1 AC bogie of the Bangalore-Nanded Express train on Saturday.

20 bodies have been identified while eight were handed over to their relatives, according to Ramesh, Railways Commercial manager.

The unidentified bodies have been sent for DNA test, which are expected to take at least 48 hours depending upon the availability of doctors. Meanwhile, authorities have begun a probe into the disaster.

As a part of the investigation to determine the cause of the fire, a 13-member team from the AP Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL) started sample collection. APFSL Director, Sharada told the media that two teams have been formed. This was in addition to the railway electric department conducting its own investigation. She said that they had found gold and other ornaments from the luggage inside the compartment, which would be used to identify the bodies.

Forensic experts have urged the kin who gathered at the hospital to identify the fully charred bodies so that they could be claimed. They advised the kin to bury the bodies till the DNA test results were declared.

However, the authorities were hard-pressed with the numbers as the bogie has facility for 64 passengers while the list contained 68 names, including that of the TTE. The fate and whereabouts of nine passengers remains unknown.
