Vijayawada: The city is vulnerable to crimes against women when compared to other cities in the country, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2012 report. Vijayawada recorded highest number of attacks on women.

The NCRB in its 2012 report says that women living in this city are more vulnerable to crime compared to 52 other cities across the country. The report said the number of cases filed per one lakh women in Vijayawada, which is 256.34, is the highest recorded in any of the 53 cities featured in the report. The rate is much higher than Andhra Pradesh’s 66.05 and India’s 60.81, making the city vulnerable to crime against women.

According to City Police Commissioner B Srinivasulu, as many as 38 cases under Nirbhaya Act were registered in 2013 under the jurisdiction of the Commissionerate. Eighty per cent of the cases involved minors who were either accused or victims, he said.

In a case that was reported recently, a 17-year-old girl attempted suicide by setting herself afire. She resorted to the extreme step unable to cope with the harassment by a married auto driver. She was admitted into intensive care. With 70 per cent burns, she was battling for life.

The city police saved a 16-year-old girl who ran away from her home in Secunderabad when they found a group of men loitering around.

A total of 1185 dowry harassment cases were registered this year against 1105 cases recorded in 2012.

In 2013, as many as 142 chain-snatching cases were registered which were 148 during the previous year.

The city police claimed that the crime rate in the city was decreased by 2 to 5 per cent when compared to the statistics in the year 2012.

Three engineering students and a doctor standing at Ramavarappadu bus shelter were mowed down by a car in October.

The year recorded another sad incident wherein a private passenger bus going to Srikakulam from Hyderabad via Vijayawada hit the divider at Benz Circle centre and crushed to death five persons sleeping on the pavement as the driver lost control.

Vijayawada recorded 33 murders, 63 robbery cases, 314 house breaking, 2087 pickpocket cases, 52 kidnap cases (in context to love, marriage and family conflicts), 382 cheating cases (chit funds, gold loans and others). A total of 8289 cases were registered under IPC in the year 2013.
