Hyderabad: The government is considering a proposal to control speed of private buses, particularly high-end Volvo buses. This has become necessary in the wake of recent accidents involving the private buses.

The administration wants to reduce the maximum speed of these vehicles to 100 km per hour.

The bus operators claim that the drivers drive at high speed on National Highways, to cover the time lost while commuting in cities due to the traffic snarls. Besides reducing the speed of these vehicles by making speed governors mandatory, the transport authorities want the bus services terminate on the city outskirts. This would ensure that the Volvo buses do not get stuck in traffic.

Following the Mahbubnagar bus accident, the officials came to a conclusion not to allow the buses inside the city limits.

According to officials, most of these buses are plying as Stage carriers, when they actually have permits as contract carrier. They also decided that if the bus operators failed to install or remove the speed governors, the authorities would take stringent measures like cancellation of their permits and fitness certificates.
