Hyderabad: Alleging that the T movement was the creation of KCR and it did not start from the hearts of the people, senior Congress leader Paladugu Venkat Rao said that the Centre by its hasty decision was punishing the people of both regions.

Participating in the debate in the Legislative Council, he said the State of Andhra Pradesh was formed on the basis of language and if they were now divided it would be the most unfortunate thing.

He said that there were attempts by international forces to balkanise the country, similar to what British did to most of the countries it colonised. Expressing his disappointment at the turn of events, he said that he was ready to touch the feet of people and leaders of Telangana, requesting them to keep the State united.

However, several pro-Telangana MLCs, including Yadava Reddy, Sudhakar Reddy and Bhanu Prasad described his statements as nothing but mockery of the sacrifices made by the people. Rao, while acknowledging the suicides of youth during the Telangana movement, he reiterated that it was not a people’s movement.. Rao further said that the 1969 movement in Telangana was a conspiracy of the landlords and the 1972 Jai Andhra movement was triggered by capitalists, who wanted the government to scrap the Land Ceiling Act.

He said that Channa Reddy used the movement for his own selfish ends. He noted that both these agitations were not people’s movements.

The PRTU MLC, G Srinivasulu Naidu, opined that districts of north Andhra were more underdeveloped compared to districts of Telangana and backwardness could not be the premise for bifurcating the State.

He said that out of 60 central institutions, about 50 were in Hyderabad and out of 340 research institutes only 20 were in Seemandhra districts. He asked the government to provide special package to underdeveloped regions of north Andhra, Rayalaseema and Mahabubnagar.

K Dileep Kumar of TRLD pointed out that thousands of crores of land was handed over to private businessmen in the name of SEZs. He held that not even 10 per cent of this land was given to Telangana people. He said that because of the Pulichintala project and open cast mining thousands of tribal population were displaced. He objected to the Governor’s rule in Hyderabad and held that if any damage was caused to the property of Seemandhra people in the city, compensation should be given by the elected new government.

He asked the Centre to hand over properties of Nizam seized by the government to the government of new State.
