Mahabubnagar: District Collector Girija Shankar was on Monday forced to yield to women’s vocal power and ordered closure of liquor shops and illicit liquor dens in Upparapalli village of Khilla Ghanapur mandal. The women alleged that the police and Excise officials failed to act since they were lured by ‘mamools’ paid by the liquor mafia.

The distraught women, mostly wives of labourers, were compelled to take the issue into their hands, moved by the devastating impact of liquor consumption has had on their lives. They were vexed with the indifferent attitude of police and Excise staff to the serious problem.

On Monday, several hundred women marched to the Collectorate and staged a vociferous dharna, after getting angry by the initial indifference of Girija Shankar. Forced to act and respond, he pulled up the Excise officials.

The reprimand drove top Excise officials to run to the village and raid the shops and confiscate liquor and ‘gudumba’ in possession of some persons. The women’s triumph is being hailed by people, making the song ‘Lechindi Mahila Lokam..’ true to the real sense of the term. They hailed the Collector’s timely action, which saved many families from getting ruined.
