Hyderabad: Prime Hospital on Thursday performed a complex surgery of re-implanting an amputated arm of a 12-year-old girl Thanishka. A medical team led by Dr Anurag Chitranshi, plastic surgeon and Dr Sathish Reddy, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon, at Prime Hospitals conducted this surgery successfully.

Dr Chitranshi said the nearly eight-hour surgery was one of the rarest of rare cases in the medical history of Hyderabad. Informing that Thanishka was recovering well, he said, “The blood circulation was restored after re-implanting the amputated right arm. This is the first success we have achieved. More surgeries are needed to restore the functioning of the nerves and tissues in the re-implanted hand.” However, In Thanishka’s case, the doctor said, it was very difficult to achieve 100 per cent success.

Even after multiple surgeries only 50 per cent strength of the arm could be restored and that too it would take time, he added. Dr Satish Reddy, senior orthopaedic surgeon, said Thanishka was brought to the emergency department at Prime Hospital on December 10, around 1.30 pm. The right arm of Thanishka got severed in an elevator accident. Within half-an-hour she was admitted to the hospital. Her hand, from just above her wrist, was amputated and she was bleeding profusely, the doctor said.

The orthpaedic surgeon said, “Another significant thing was that the family of the patient put the amputated arm in a proper manner. That really saved the girl and made her comeback with her original arm. The family members brought the amputated arm in a plastic bag put in a thermacol box filled with ice pieces and ice packs. Everything was done in right time, with right preparation and technique in Thanishka’s case. Some more surgeries including physiotherapy are needed to Thanishka”. The total expenditure of the surgery was around Rs 2 lakh.
