Civic staff strike hits lifting of garbage

Hyderabad: Several cities and towns in the State including Hyderabad witnessed trash bins fully filled with heaps of garbage and strewn all over due to the indefinite strike by over 1.2 lakh municipal employees’ from Saturday onwards.

Works in departments like sanitation which includes sweeping of roads and lifting of wastage besides entomology, have come to a standstill because of this strike.

Several trade unions including BMS, CITU, AITUC, HMS, among others have joined the Statewide stir. The main demand of the striking employees is enhancement of monthly wages from the existing Rs 6,500 to Rs 16,500. Municipal Minister Maheedhar Reddy held talks with trade union representatives on Friday to convince them from withdrawing their decision to strike. However, talks failed leading to the civic staff launching their stir as planned from February 7 midnight.
