Venkataswamy, a Dalit leader was one of the founding members of Telangana Praja Samithi party which was launched for Telangana. He contested from the party and won too.
In his political career spanning about five decades, Venkataswamy was elected to the legislative assembly, legislative council and Parliament seven times.
