Hyderabad: With an eye on the urban local body elections, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday announced ‘freebies’ which include setting up of ‘Anna’ canteens (in the name of party founder President NT Rama Rao) to provide food at cheaper prices to poor, and ‘NTR Sujala’ scheme to supply safe drinking water in all municipalities and municipal corporations.

Addressing the media on Monday, he said that the TDP would also take up housing schemes in a big way covering the poor. It will also regularise the house sites which were already in the possession of the deserved families.

Coming down heavily on the State government for its failure in containing the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, Naidu said if his party was voted to power in the local body election, the Rythu bazaars would be strengthened in all municipalities, and essential commodities would be ensured at affordable prices.

Solar power generation, clean and green and sanitation would be given priority under the infrastructure development programme of the municipalities.

Naidu held the state government was responsible for the weakening of the local bodies.

Centre stopped release of Rs 2,500 crore grant for the development of the municipalities as the State government failed to hold local body elections. While Rs 670 crore for the construction of flood canals were misused. Rs 11,907 crore allocated under JNNURM was underutilized. Non- completion of drinking water projects is a stark example of the sincerity of the government in solving the civic issues, the TDP leader said and sought the suggestions from people to finalise the manifesto for the municipal election.
