Polavaram will be completed in 5 years: Jairam Ramesh
Rajahmundry: Former Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has chosen an appropriate place to launch his party, as it has one of the best crematoria (‘kailasa bhoomi’), quipped Union Urban Development Minister Jairam Ramesh here on Tuesday. He hinted that the new party would end up in the crematorium.
At a press conference, the minister mentioned that Kiran, made chief minister after occupying the Chief Whip’s post, had now transformed into ‘chief betrayer’. He claimed that problems for the Congress arose in Seemandhra as Kiran and his colleagues failed to explain properly the State reorganization.
Jairam Ramesh described Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajgopal as ‘pepper spray MP’. He would not shed tears for people who left the party, as most of them were businessmen. He addressed the media after visiting the villages affected by the Polavaram project.
The GoM member urged Seemandhra people not to view him as an agent of Telangana; he was neither an agent of Telangana nor Seemandhra. He said the Congress wanted to protect the interests of both Seemandhra and Telangana.
The Minister claimed that the TDP was ‘confused’ whether to deliver or not; whereas the Congress had delivered twins---Seemandhra and Telangana. He rebutted criticism that the special category status for Seemandhra was not permitted by the National Development Council. The NDC had powers only to endorse, but it was the Centre which gave permission.
Jairam Ramesh, along with Koppula Raju, a former IAS officer who heads the AICC SC Cell, left for Polavaram project site in the morning. After speaking to engineers on chances of reducing the project height from 45 ft to stop areas in Odisha and Chattisgarh from getting submerged, they left for Gondi, where half of villagers are waiting for compensation.
The minister assured that the UPA Government and the Act, incorporating the construction of Polavaram, would take care of the 45,000 affected families. He said the Centre would give top priority to reduce the submergence area and save lives of about 1.45 lakh people.
Replying to questions on Polavaram, the minister asserted that everyone was concerned to complete the project in five years.
Interacting with the residents of Polavaram project site, he described Hyderabad and Polavaram as gifts for Telangana and Andhra respectively post the State’s bifurcation. The minister stated that the Centre would give special packages to both Telangana and the residuary State. While AP State would get 70 per cent funds as grants and 30 per cent as loan, it would be reverse in the case of Telangana.
