Municipal Polls Peaceful, Municipal Elections 2014Hyderabad: High voter turnout was reported at different places in the municipal elections held in the state on Sunday. The overall percentage was expected to cross 75 per cent. Prakasam district accounted for the highest polling of 83 per cent.

The polling was over 70 per cent in 13 districts including Warangal and Khammam in Telangana region. State Election Commissioner P Ramakanth Reddy said that the elections were peaceful, barring stray incidents at one or two places. The elections were held for 145 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations. He said that re-polling was likely to be held at seven places.

The turnout crossed even 80 per cent at some of the municipalities. In all 17,864 contestants are in the fray in the municipalities and another 3,343 candidates are testing their fortunes in the corporations. The State Election Commission (SEC) deployed 14,000 electronic voting machines, 16 companies of central paramilitary forces and 130 battalions of Andhra Pradesh Special Police, besides regular police as part of security arrangements for the elections.

As per the schedule announced by the SEC, the results of the municipal elections are to be announced on April 2. However, all the parties have urged the Commission not to declare the results before May 7. The High Court has already been moved on the issue, and its decision is awaited.
