Kothapet (East Godavari): Nine persons were killed in a major road accident near here on Sunday when a truck carrying coconut load rammed into an auto carrying 11 passengers belonging to Bheemanapalli village in Uppalaguptham mandal of Amalapuram constituency. Among the victims were seven members of a family, including four women and a child. While the five were killed on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries in the Kakinada government hospital.

According to Ravulapalem CI, the mishap occurred when Chetla Durga Rao, an auto driver, was taking all his 11 family members to Ravulapalem around 7 am. When he was crossing Gollagottuvari Palem, on the outskirts of Modugunta, the truck, which was going to Amalapuram, rammed the auto head-on. The mishap occurred when the auto driver tried to overtake a vehicle. In the process, the auto collided with a mini-van coming in the opposite direction, resulting in the deaths. Police shifted the bodies to the mortuary in Kothapet government hospital. The van driver was taken into custody. Police took up an investigation.

The auto overturned and broke into two. Under the impact, it was dragged to the right side of the road. Rao (40), his wife Durga (35), Papayamma (60), Nagamani (45), Balakrishna (35), Nani (12), Nedunuri Manga (45) were killed on the spot, while Chetla Chitti (two) and Chetla Venkateswara Rao (50) succumbed in the hospital. Two others Chetla Pallaiah (24) and Jyoti (four), who sustained grievous injuries, are undergoing treatment. East Godavari SP Vijay Kumar rushed to the spot. Amalapuram MP GV Harsha Kumar visited the accident spot and the hospital. He also went to Bheemanapalli to console the bereaved.
