Hyderabad: Torrential rains lashed many parts of Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours under the influence of a low pressure area, causing damage to standing crops over hundreds of acres.

Farmers in Tears as Rains Lash State

The moderate to heavy rains caused extensive damage to mango and paddy crops besides disrupting power supply in many areas including parts of the state capital. In Prakasam district two women died as lightning struck them. Adoni in Kurnool district was battered by heavy rain, flooding roads and low lying areas in the town. Farmers of the East Godavari and West Godavari districts were once again in the grip of panic as untimely rains hit the district. Weather department had announced that heavy rains may lash both the districts in next two days.

A farmer leader in Konaseema, Matta Prabhakar Rao said that rain at this point of time when the crop was on sheaves was very depressing for the farmers. He added that if rains continued for two more days, the farmers would be in danger as he would not get even minimum support price. In Warangal, widespread rain damaged standing and harvested crop. Thousands of bags of paddy and maize brought to markets at Warangal, Jangaon, Parkal, Mahabubabad agriculture markets also suffered damage.

Agitated over this, farmers at Mahabubabad, Parakala and Jangaon staged a rasta-roko on the main road in front of the market yards demanding the officials to make arrangements for the procurement of produce drenched in rain. An estimated 3,000 bags of paddy was affected by rains at the market. They also protested against the negligent attitude of market officials for failing to provide tarpaulin sheets. At Enumamula agriculture market yard about 5,000 bags of mirchi were drenched due to the rains on the day leaving the farmers distressed. In Karimnagar, about 5,000 quintals of paddy is said to have been damaged. Similar damages were reported from Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Adilabad and Khammam districts.
