New Delhi: AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh has admitted that the Congress decision on the creation of Telangana has hurt the party in the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh.

Interacting with media persons, Digvijay Singh said, “I have no hesitation in admitting that with the decision on the creation of Telangana has hurt the party in the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh.”

Singh articulated the difficulty the Congress is facing in Andhra Pradesh, especially at a time when the Congress does not seem very well placed in Telangana. The Congress is worried over the poll prospects and its possible impact on the overall position of the Congress.

The Congress calculation was that since all parties unanimously agreed to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, barring the exception of the CPM, there will be no adverse reaction. However, the YSRCP and TDP did manage to have the cake and eat it too, while the Congress found itself at the receiving end.

Apparently, after Singh took over as the AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, his one main resolve was to find an early solution to the long-pending issue of Telangana Statehood demand. All he wanted was that it should be decided either way and should not be dragged on for far too long.

It was during his tenure as the in-charge of Andhra Pradesh that finally the decision was taken to create Telangana. The decision was virtually taken as early as on December 9, 2009, on creation of Telangana. That decision was put on hold in the wake of aggressive protests that broke out.

However, the decision was temporarily put on hold only to create a consensus and go ahead with it in a spirit of goodwill. That was never to be. Having taken the decision, the party could not go back on it, either. When creating a consensus was found well-nigh impossible, it was decided to press ahead with the decision. Expectedly, the party faced unprecedented anger.
