N Chandrababu NaiduHyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh got a shot in the arm as the Union Power Ministry allotted 65 MW of additional power to it from the Central Generation Stations (CGS) on Monday.

The AP government has been fighting against the “injustice” meted out in the allotment of power to the State on consumption basis when the State was divided. The AP Reorganisation Act specified the share in allotment at 53.89 per cent to Telangana and 46.11 per cent at AP in the power generated from the CGSs.

On the insistence of the AP government, Centre had constituted a committee to resolve the issue of power sharing between the two States and to study the subsequent decision of AP government to cancel the PPAs which were not approved by the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC).

The committee, which met on Monday under the chairmanship of Neeraj Mathur on Monday, agreed to increase AP's share in power by 1.77 per cent taking the share to 47.88 per cent. This would mean that AP would now get an additional power of 65 MW from the power that is generated in the State. The meeting was held in the presence of officials of energy department of both the States. The committee also heard arguments from both sides on the cancellation of PPAs by the AP government. Telangana government demanded that the PPAs could not be cancelled as they were entered into in the undivided State.

The AP government argued they had every right to cancel the PPAs which have not been approved by the APERC. The PPAs not approved by the APERC would be treated as null and void, it said. The committee decided they would hear the case again on July 24. The issue of solar power projects would also come up for discussion on that day.
