Hyderabad: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Saturday expressed the view that a great opportunity has been presented to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly to mould its members into "good members" as 98 out of 175 were first-timers. They are also not seasoned politicians. It is difficult to mould the seasoned politicians, she felt.

Addressing at orientation classes for Andhra Pradesh legislators on the second day of the camp, the Lok Sabha speaker said Legislators should have a "360 degree vision" as they were accountable for all their constituents. She said the legislators were accountable to not only the voters who supported them but also to those who opposed them in the elections. Noting that “respect can’t be demanded, it must be earned,” Mahajan asked the legislators to stick firmly to moral and ethical values.

They should serve people and address the grievances of all without any discrimination. Election was the expression of the trust of people. Members would not become leaders unless they fulfil the aspirations of all voters. She advised legislators to “do anything by the rule” and necessarily respect the Chair and the fellow members. “Disrespecting the Chair is disrespecting the House,” she said.

She added the most important challenge before the members was how to become great and not how to appear to be a great person. Mahajan asked legislators, particularly the first-timers, to study various issues and come prepared to the House. “Your range of issues should be broad. You need to be versatile but you can specialise in specific areas of your interest.

Attend the House, be attentive and sit through the proceedings. You can learn substantially by watching senior members in the House. Regular participation in the debates also enhances the status of the Legislative bodies,” she said.

She suggested the newly-elected members that decency and decorum should be maintained to boost their image in public life and asked them to keep in mind that decorum in the House was vital.

Union Minister for Minority development Najma Hemtullah, AP Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasad Rao, Council Chairman A Chakrapani, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and State Legislative Affairs Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu were also present.
