Gudivada/Hyderabad: In a daring daylight robbery, an attention-diversion gang targeted a 62-year-old man and fled with a bag containing Rs 9 lakh from a scooter in front of State Bank of India (SBI) in Chaitanyapuri police limits on Thursday.

Guru Shankar, a retired employee of Food Corporation of India (FCI), residing in Samathapuri Colony, Nagole, came to the bank to withdraw cash. He kept the cash bag in the scooter dickey . The crooks, who were following him, diverted his attention and fled with the bag, the police said. As Shankar was about to start the scooter a passer-by asked him to stop stating that a tyre got deflated. While he got off the vehicle, the gang snatched the cash bag. ‘The miscreants would have followed him from the bank. We suspect the hand of habitual offenders, probably locals," the police said. They recovered CCTV footage from the surveillance cameras outside the bank. In a similar incident, businessmen were relieved of two kg gold ornaments around noon at Begum Bazar on Thursday. According to the police, unidentified persons attacked the businessmen who were travelling in an auto and fled with the ornaments. Based on their complaint, the police registered a case. They are looking for the culprits.

A bank employee was on Thursday robbed off Rs 11 lakh by some unidentified persons who threw chilli powder in his eyes in Gudivada town. DSP Naganna said L Ram Prasad, the complainant, was supposed to deposit the cash in an ATM of Axis Bank.

‘As he was heading for his home for having lunch before visiting the ATM, some men threw chilli powder in his eyes and snatched a bag containing the cash," the DSP said. Investigation was on.
