AP government’s decision to link Aadhar with ration cards may not be the right one

Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led AP Government may be foraying into uncharted territory by moving to link Aadhaar cards with ration cards. On August 18, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had announced that all social benefit schemes would be linked to Aadhaar.

Taking the issue forward, Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunitha on Friday said the government proposed to weed out about 16 lakh bogus ration cards based on the information pertaining to the economic status of individuals as per the information provided in the Aadhaar cards. The process of weeding out the bogus cards would be done in about one week's time. But the problem is that the Aadhaar cards themselves are not fool-proof and several technical snags were encountered during the process of issuing them.

By planning to link Aadhaar with ration cards, the TDP government might be making life difficult for those who do not have Aadhaar cards till this day. The coverage is not 100 percent as yet. The government may also face legal problems if someone challenges the decision in a court of law as the Supreme Court gave a ruling that Aadhaar cannot be used as a basis for extending the benefits of welfare schemes.
