Srikakulam: Several villages in L N Pet mandal were marooned on Saturday with Vamsadhara river in spate. The river is flowing at danger level at Basavarajupet, Mariapalli, Varivalas and Dabbapadu villages.

Heavy inflows reached the river following incessant rain in the upstream areas in Odisha. The Irrigation department officials lifted 20 gates at the Gotta Barrage in Hira mandal to let out flood waters into the sea.

According to reports reaching here, the flood water spilled over and flowed on the highway. Penugodu village was flooded. The Nagavali at Palakonda is also in spate. The flood water submerged the highway in Sithampet and Palakonda, paralysing vehicular traffic between the two villages. Traffic between Palakonda and Patapatnam also came to a halt with flood water from the Gajjala Khan canal overflowing. Some villages are reportedly under water.

District Collector Gaurav Uppal, accompanied by officials, visited some of flood-affected areas and directed officials to take up rescue work.
