Forest official held for helping smugglers, The police had been keeping a tab on Ghalib’s phone calls and concluded that he had links with Babu.
Atmakur (Nellore): Local police on Friday arrested Anantasagar Divisional Range Officer Shaik Ghalib for allegedly cooperating with an inter-state red sanders smuggler Surendra Babu alias Babu Reddy, and sent him to judicial remand. They also arrested Venkataramana, a close follower of Babu of Chilakalamarri village in Anantasagar mandal and sent him to remand, after registering a case.
The police had been keeping a tab on Ghalib’s phone calls and concluded that he had links with Babu. Altaf Hussain, Atmakur CI said Babu is the most wanted red sanders smuggler in Kurnool district. As many as 27 cases are registered against him in various police stations. According to the police, Babu had been using his political contacts to browbeat the forest department staff. He had been smuggling red sanders to other States and looted forest wealth worth crores.
