Ongole: The police officials here seem to be vying with each other in nabbing criminals to earn praise from the district police boss, Superintendent of Police Ch Srikanth.

The police officials in Ongole town seem to be showing unprecedented urgency now in cracking cases and nabbing criminals. However, they reportedly began to act in such a manner after the SP admonished them for not discharging their duties properly.

Last week a special police team working directly under the SP arrested Toomu Venkat Rao, for indulging in cricket betting. However, Venkat Rao has been reportedly in cricket betting for the last eight years. The local police did not nab him until the new SP took charge and personally monitored the case. It is learnt that the SP issued charge memos to some police officials in Ongole for their failure to nab Venkat Rao until he personally took interest in cracking the cricket betting case.

Following the admonishment from the SP, the two town police under the supervision of CI Suryanarayana conducted a raid at Annavarappadu area in the town and arrested 11 prostitutes and 3 women running the prostitution racket. The two town police held a press conference and disclosed about the arrest of the prostitutes. However, the police did not arrest the men who visited the prostitutes.

When the reporters raised a query on why the prostitutes were arrested, the two town police replied that it was a drive aimed at eradicating prostitution. The media persons were left wondering why the police failed to conduct counseling to the prostitutes instead of arresting them.

Annavarappadu area in Ongole has been notorious for prostitution for several years. It was not a new phenomenon. Some policemen attached to police stations in other circles alleged that the arrest of the prostitutes was only an act aimed at securing pat from the SP.

The local people urged the police to discharge their regular duties properly and take measures to bring down the crime rate in the district headquarters.
