Vijayawada: Doctors of the government hospital here are virtually playing with the lives of people who approach them for treatment. Instead of giving medicine to cure their ailments they are allegedly offering cure after making wrong diagnosis, which sometimes resulted even in fatalities.

  • Doctors allegedly giving wrong cure, resulting in fatalities
  • A patient given leg bandage, ignoring head injury
  • Patients want to be discharged; go to private hospitals
  • Superintendent Suryakumari promises stringent action

The doctors’ professional conduct has not changed in tune with the various regimes that ruled the State. Politicians after making lofty promises to change hospital for the better have not cared to even look at it. Such is the state of affairs of the hospital that in the past patients used to worry as it was lacking in medicines and its surroundings were unhygienic. Now they have to be contending with wrong treatment of doctors, who work without concentrating on their duties.

Numerous complaints of patients’ relatives to politicians and higher Health department officials do not appear to help mend matters, as they were allegedly dumped in the bin. The negligent attitude of doctors is best illustrated by a recent example of Pavankumar of Pamurru who was admitted with serious injuries following a motorcycle accident. His leg was bandaged, while the head injury was forgotten!. He died after putting up a struggle for two days.

To add to woes of his relatives while one doctor said the patient was alive! Another stated he was no more. The relatives took the patient to another hospital where doctors declared that he was dead days back. Agitated, they demonstrated at the government hospital. Seeing this episode, other scared patients wanted to be discharged so that they could go to private hospitals. Their relatives alleged that doctors did not oblige the patients.

However, hospital superintendent Suryakumari says action will be taken against erring doctors. Local residents are pressing for stringent steps against doctors who made contradictory statement on Pavankumar’s status.
