Hyderabad: The National Highways of Nagpur, Bengaluru and Vijayawada are turning to be death traps as these highways witnessed as many as 400 accidents till November this year.

Most of the accidents took place at night or early morning on these stretches. According to data compiled by the police, around 90 per cent of the accidents took place at night.

“There are stretches on these highways where there are no service roads,” a traffic police inspector attached to LB Nagar said.

Police officials also blame over-speeding, negligence and traffic violations for most of the accidents on these highways. They also admit that they do not have adequate equipments like breath analysers to curb drunk driving or speed guns to keep an eye on over-speeding of vehicles.

Speeding vehicles, pedestrians crossing roads and bikers taking U turns at unauthorised places are the main reasons for accidents on the 150-km stretch between Vijayawada and Hyderabad (NH 65), where 80 accidents occurred till November, according to data provided by Cyberabad police.

Transport department officials agree that there is a staff crunch. “With the present strength, we are finding it difficult to check violations,” they said.
